I have had HWA for two years, and their service up till now has been fair. I had the pressure pump on our well system fail. HWA gave us a contractor but the contractor refused to honor the contract. Finally got the contractor to come out to replace the pressure pump, but HWA stated that the pressure pump was not covered. Their exclusions did not specifically state that the pressure pump was excluded. I had a very difficult time contacting HWA. I will not use HWA again and will not recommend them ever.

I have been happy with HWA. they fixed my AC without a problem. They replaced the burners on my stove ($550) and bought me out for an electrical hood short out. The only reason I did not give all 5′s was because they increased the home visit from $55 to $75.

This is my second time to call HWA for help – THIS TIME was an panicky, crucial situation with water pouring from hot water heater! The HWA representative was concerned re my dilemia and responded professionally – and in a CARING manner. Even though she faced a difficult problem (no plumbing co. listed for my area) – she stayed in touch with me, AND once she made contact with a plumbing company, the owner of Branson Construction Co. WAS AT MY FRONT DOOR in 20-25 minutes! A representative stayed in constant contact with Mr. Branson resolving all his questions and concerns – A NEW hot water heater was installed, area was cleaned up, and job was completed in a outstanding period of repair time. I feel VERY LUCKY and EXGTREMELY appreciative of both the HWA service and the service of the Plumbing company. OUTSTANDING SERVICE FROM BOTH. THANK YOU.

I have been a Realtor for 25 years & have used a lot of home warranty companies for my clients, but never have I been so unhappy as my clients & I were with Home Warranty of America. They refused to pay for a claim on the furnace of a home that was purchased in late May & when the furnace was turned on for the first time in the Fall it would not come on. The furnace was inspected thoroughly in May when purchased & inspected fine.We were told since it was the first time the clients used the furnace & it didn’t work it must not of been working when they bought it which is completely untrue. I was standing there next to the inspecter when he tested it. Will never recommend HWA to anyone else. Don’t let this happen to you. The clients wasted $400 on this lousy warranty. I have the CA policy which entitles me to $1000 roof coverage and had them send someone out to take a look. According to the contractor, HWA told him over the phone “to just patch this customer’s roof up with roofing compound” but the contractor refused to because he knew that wouldn’t do it. HWA then refused to acknowledge my $1000 coverage despite me having it in writing. One operator would acknowledge it, then transfer me to someone who played dumb, then transfer me back, etc. They basically did everything they could to avoid paying out the coverage they knew I had. Please, do not use HWA! – Amanda P, San Gabriel, CA

Requests were processed, and the breakdowns in my home were usually covered under the warranty. I don’t expect perfection, and HWA provided decent service with very little out-of-pocket costs. My main complaint resides in the company’s desire to have all communication via email. Sometimes, a call would be more effective….Katie R.

Very happy with HWA. Our water heater was leaking and the service man was quick to determine that this water heater was old and ready to be replaced. He already had a new one in his van and put it in within hours. Took the old one out and all we had to do was mop the floor! This was very fast and great service and we were never out of hot water! Would definitely recommend HWA (actually, we did already- to our neighbors

I have been a customer of Home Warranty of America for a number of years and have always had an excellent experience with them. They have terrific vendors for the most part and they are always pleasant to deal with and very helpful and are even apologetic when an item is not covered, offering to recommend vendors that can help. Obviously, there have been a few vendors who have not been up to par in the past, but I have found that they are removed from the company’s list soon after. I don’t have claims every year, but its always a comfort to know that with one call, I will have the problem resolved. Love HWA!

We called at 7:50 am about our well pump as we had almost no water pressure. I was called about 20 mins later by the technician who came out an hour later. He told me it was the switch that went bad. It was fixed ASAP , however the home warranty didn’t cover the switch. I was not happy about that and I think it should be. But the customer service and the technician especially was great.

I have 2 homes with HWA I call this morning because my garage door would not open I do have garage system coverage or I thought I had……a cable broke and I was told was not covered …..funny but without this cable the garage system would not work. The repair cost $136 that included the $75 deduct, so they would only be $61 out of pocket I complained to customer service but to no avail …..looks like they lost my business.

The claims process was easy and HWA quickly lined up an A/C repair company. The Hallmark One Hour Air Conditioning repair technician arrived on-time, and was courteous and professional. He assessed the problem and reported it to HWA. At that point someone dropped the ball, and I think it was Hallmark. HWA asked Hallmark for additional info, and Hallmark did not respond. The next day I called both HWA and Hallmark. HWA said that they were still waiting for info, and Hallmark said that they would check with the technician. The next day I called again, and was told that HWA received some of the info they needed, but not all of it. I was without A/C for 14 days. If communication between HWA and Hallmark had been better, my A/C would have been fixed at least 3 days sooner. Other than that, the service that I received was very good. – Chris, Friendswood, TX

I had the worst experience imaginable with this company. They tried to make me purchase an entirely new AC based on the way they chose to deal with the 410a R22 transition on freon, when it absolutely was not necessary. All the AC repair people I spoke to said it was unnecessary. The other competitive home warranty companies were not dealing with their customers the way HWA was. It took me 9 months to get a penny out of them and I had to threaten to sue to get the payment. After this policy expired, I purchased a competitive policy from another large company. After several months, I had a claim and it went completely smoothly. It was like night and day with my ordeal with HWA. HWA may have a slick website, but don’t be fooled. I had a simple repair and they tried to hose me for nearly $5000. Luckily, I was in a position to fight back, but I feel really sorry for those who need that warranty money to make ends meet. I should have asked around the realtor community before purchasing this policy. I have not spoken to a single realtor who has recommended this company to me. Stick with what your realtor recommends, as they know the real reputation of the various home warranty companies. I wouldn’t wish my experience on my worst enemy. This was in 2010-11. – MBuccieri, Arlington, TX

After paying the over $500 premium, on my first call for service to repair a dryer that doesn’t work, the repairman said it was not his responsability to connect the gas line (which I had disconnected for safety reasons). He left without even troubleshooting the dryer. This is a complete failure on HWA part, and a total waste of money. I will never purchase a home warrenty again.

Service was prompt. Our problem occurred on a Friday late afternoon so we did not get the part and service on the new air condenser for our heat pump until Tuesday. I think it would have been faster if a weekend had not been in there. Our service tech came out on Saturday but the repair could not be done since a new condenser was required and the warranty company does not do orders over the weekend. We did have the part in 48 hours (during business hours) so I think overall everything was good.

I’d like to share about my experience with Home Warranty of America. In case you’re in a hurry, let me say simply they did not do what they promised. I wouldn’t choose them again and I wouldn’t recommend them. If you have more time, let me explain that we had the sellers pay for a year of their service when we bought our home. It was a pretty good year- we had no claims, so we had no complaints. We felt pretty good about HWA so we figured we’d renew our policy. About that time my dad, who lived with us, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. We had a terrible month and then he passed away in my house. During that time our policy ended. When I realized, I immediately called them and reinstated the policy for $650. There were TWO days we were not covered, but we were told that due to our circumstances, they would look at it like the two days hadn’t happened. As luck would have it, our double electric built-in ovens went out at the same time. The 15 year old units were original to the house. I called to report the occurrence, and was promptly told that since it happened during our two days of lapsed coverage they wouldn’t be able to do anything. I told them about dad, and they agreed to disregard the two days- it would be as if there was no lapse. I felt pretty good about them then. But things quickly deteriorated from there. They took over 10 days to send someone- after one who canceled same day, when I had already requested off of work. When the repair guy finally came- Old Guys Appliance Repair in San Antonio, TX- he told us that very day that the ovens would not be able to be repaired since they don’t make the part anymore. After (once) daily calls, I finally got the home warranty company and the Old Guys to talk to each other. (They both ran me around each day before I got them both on two different phones and told them what the other was saying- so high school!!) After they confirmed what we’ve known for a week, the home warranty people told me the claim would go to ‘options’. I was told options would either be replacement, or cash allowance. Good. No. Bad. Options came back saying they would offer us a total of $100 cash for the price of the part that is no longer made. They said that since we were in our first 30 days of our contract they would not replace anything covered in our contract. I reminded them what I’d been told about waiving the lapse, about having a whole year under our belts with no claims at all, and they basically told us that even with our extenuating circumstances that they wouldn’t pay more than $100. Brandon and Jennifer both treated me like I’m dumb or something, repeating themselves a lot, trying to get me to believe what they were saying. I was incredulous and questioning how they came to that after promising something else. I had to tell them both to stop repeating themselves, to answer my questions. I was not yelling or being rude. I was calm. They had no reason to act that way. I feel sorry for them both. What a crappy job they have, and what a crappy company they work for! This is literally causing us a hardship. You might already know how expensive a funeral is. You might understand how hard it is to bury your dad. You might know what it’s like to be kicked when your down, to have insult added to injury. Home Warranty of America wasted precious time (it’s Mid-December, and I don’t know anyone who doesn’t use their oven during this time of year), lied to us about waiving two days of lapse even with painful extenuating circumstances, and were rude, cheap, and terrible to work with throughout this whole experience. When we needed them most, they were not there for us. They do not give a crap about us or about you. They only want to find ways to get out of paying for claims. I guess that’s the nature of insurance, the house always wins. But again, if you’re shopping for home warranty companies, steer clear of these guys. They’ll do anything to get out of paying, and they’ll be happy to have you wait a long time and then pay $75 to their preferred vendor before letting you know you’re screwed. Buyer beware: They’ll say whatever they need to get you to sign on, then totally let you down when things get rough. Consider yourself warned!

we had a handle break off a 60 year old cast iron/cement sink in our new basement…and we ad a basement bath sink that hot water was non existant in…..i put in a claim online nd within hours , we rcvd a call from Benders Plumbing and made an appt for 2 days out, although they wanted to come the very next day. They came and assessed the problems, called in to the program and the sink broken handle was a covered expense but unfortunately the hot water issue was because of a 60 year old clogged pipe….but since the plimber was already at the house, he charged us a nominal fee to replace the pipes that were bad. So we rcvd a brand new faucet system and HOT water in our basement bath! I was very pleased and once again VERY HAPPY that we had purchased this home warranty when we bought our new (old) home…..It has definetly paid for itself already

We are extremely dissatisfied with HWA. The first tech for our A/C repair cut wires on the wrong unit disabling the working unit. Four companies later and eight days without A/C diagnosed a bad compressor. HWA refused to replace with same manufacturer. They have contract only with Carrier. HWA tells us take it or leave it. Offered a “buy out” settlement of 1400.00. We request a Trane tech … denied. We reluctantly accept the buy out offer. Four days later that offer is reduced to about 1100.00. Supervisor says they are deducting for parts installed during diagnosis and she was unaware of the installation when the offer was made. Funny thing is the techs told us they must have approval from HWA for any work BEFORE it is done. Long periods on hold, more than one service vendor told us HWA is difficult to work with. One vendor never called us back to set a service time. Another one told us to call HWA back and request someone else. We will NEVER do business with HWA again. Recommend you stay far away from them based on our experience!! – Homeowner, Tulsa, OK

Avoid these shady scammers at all costs… If you want to see the calibre of business this is, go to the Better Business Bureaur’s website… 493 registered complaints in 3 years. I have now had to hire a lawyer to get repairs to my Heating/AC because they paraded a stream of incompetent and unqualified vendors to my house and none of them have been able to fix my heater. They suspect the problem is in the floor/walls and now it looks costly and low and behold I’m getting friction from Home Warranty of America now. I had to request 4 different vendors because some missed repeated appointments and then the final vendor stopped working on this issue because they said it looks like we’re gonna have to cut into the walls and possible the floor and there were afraid HWA would not cover that. I decided to look up each of these vendors on Angie’s List and what a shocker when I found scathing reviews for each of them. It’s obvious HWA goes out and finds the bottom feeder vendors desperate for business and willing to charge less. Avoid these scammers at all costs… They know it costs more money to get a lawyer than most of these repairs or the cost of their warranty and their business model is built on this fact. Unfortunately for them, I have very good legal assistance benefits thru my company and it’s not costing me a dime. I have now found that a co-worker’s sister used them and had similar experiences trying to get repairs done on her pool. But don’t take my word for it… just search the Internet…. there is no shortage of unhappy HWA customers.
